What is the best ERP for small manufacturers?
There is no single best ERP for small manufacturers. The right choice depends on seven things: your shop type, how many people will use it, your budget, whether you need real job costing, how much you must customise, who owns the data and what support you get. Systems built for 10 to 50 person shops usually fit better than mid-market suites.

Seven criteria that decide it
Start with your shop, not a vendor list. Write one line for each criterion below, then score every candidate against it. The right one scores well on the three or four that matter most in your shop.
- Shop type and headcount: job shop, repeat production or assembly, and how many people log in daily.
- Budget: what you can pay each month, and once for setup and training.
- Job costing: whether you need real material and labour cost per job, or only a stock count.
- Customisation: the fields, forms and rules you must change without a developer.
- Data ownership: whether you can export every record at any time and leave without penalty.
- Support: who answers, how fast, and in which time zone.
The options people shortlist
These are the names that come up most often, listed with what each is generally known for. Deployment matters more than feature lists at this stage, because it decides who looks after the servers.
| System | Deployment | Generally known for |
|---|---|---|
| MRPeasy | Cloud | Production planning and MRP for small manufacturers |
| Katana | Cloud | Inventory and make-to-order flows with e-commerce links |
| Odoo | Cloud or self-hosted | Modular suite with an open-source community edition |
| ERPNext | Cloud or self-hosted | Open-source ERP with a manufacturing module |
| TranZact | Cloud | Sales, purchase and production for Indian SMEs |
| SAP Business One | Cloud or on-premise | Mid-sized company ERP sold through partners |
| NetSuite | Cloud | Finance-led suite for growing mid-market companies |
| Fishbowl | Cloud or on-premise | Inventory and manufacturing with QuickBooks links |
| Zoho Inventory | Cloud | Stock and order management within the Zoho suite |
| ZMOS | Cloud | Job costing, stock and quality for 10 to 50 person shops |
Why size is the first filter
Most mismatches come from size. Mid-market suites assume a project team, an implementation partner and months of configuration. A 15 person shop has none of that, so the system either stalls or runs half set up. Small-shop tools go the other way: quick to start, but some stop at inventory and never reach job costing or quality records. Decide which end you are closer to before any demo. A shop that expects to pass 100 users within three years can justify a bigger system now.
A two-week way to decide
Pick three candidates that pass the size filter. Give each the same ten real records: five items, two bills of materials, two work orders and one purchase order. Ask the vendor to walk those records through the system rather than a demo dataset. Ask for an export of what you entered. Then price three years rather than one, including the users you will add. The system that handled your records without a workaround and gave your data back is usually the answer.
Where ZMOS fits
ZMOS is built for sheet-metal, machining and fabrication shops of 10 to 50 people. It runs in the browser, costs each job at real material issue cost plus labour at the work-centre rate, keeps a stock ledger where a correction is a new movement rather than an edit, and lets you add fields and workflow rules yourself. Accounting, CRM and quality sit in the same workspace, with export at any time. It is not the fit for a large plant with hundreds of users, a process industry that runs on batches and formulas, or a company that must run software on its own servers.

Inside ZMOS
Is a cloud ERP safe enough for a small manufacturer?
Usually, if the vendor publishes how it handles sign-in, backups and access. Ask for a security page, two-factor sign-in and an audit log. A cloud vendor with those is normally safer than an office server nobody patches.
How many ERP users does a small manufacturer need?
Count the people who must enter or read data daily: office staff, supervisors and anyone logging labour at a machine. Many shops start with three to six seats and add shop-floor seats once barcode job cards are in use.
Should the ERP have accounting built in?
If your accountant will work in the ERP ledger, built-in accounting removes double entry. If they insist on Tally, QuickBooks or Xero, choose a system that exports cleanly. Either way, stock and job costs must come from one place.
What is the biggest mistake when choosing an ERP?
Choosing on feature count. A long feature list hides whether the system handles your real orders. The second mistake is skipping the export test, which leaves you tied to whatever you picked.
