Is there a free ERP for small manufacturers?

Free ERP for a small manufacturer comes in three forms: open-source software you host yourself, free tiers of paid products with user or record limits, and time-limited trials. None is free in total cost. Hosting, setup, backups and your own hours are the price. Decide how much time you can spend instead of money, then choose the form that matches.

The three kinds of free

The word covers three different deals, and they suit different shops.

  • Open source: Odoo Community and ERPNext can be downloaded and run with no licence fee. You provide the server, the updates and the skills.
  • Free tiers: some cloud products offer a permanently free plan limited by users, records or features. Fine for testing; usually outgrown within a year of real use.
  • Trials and free periods: a full product for a fixed time, after which you pay. The right use is a serious pilot with real data rather than a browse.

What free really costs

A self-hosted system needs a server or a cloud instance, a backup that is tested, security updates, and someone who can fix it when an upgrade breaks a module. That person is either on your payroll or on a contract. Add the hours your own staff spend on setup and the cost of a wrong decision made on bad data while the system is half configured. For a 10 person shop with no technical staff, those costs often exceed a modest subscription. For a shop with a capable IT person or a trusted local implementer, open source can be a good deal, and you keep full control of the code and data.

Open-source options in practice

Odoo Community is a modular suite with inventory and manufacturing apps; the paid Enterprise edition adds features and hosting, and a partner network does implementations. ERPNext is a full ERP with a manufacturing module, maintained by Frappe, available self-hosted or on Frappe's own cloud. Both have active communities and documentation. Neither is a weekend install for a shop without technical help. Budget for an implementer or for a staff member's time, and plan who will upgrade the system each year.

How to use a trial well

Treat a trial as a pilot with your own data.

  • Load twenty real items, three bills of materials and two open work orders in the first week.
  • Run one real job from material issue to close and read its cost.
  • Add a custom field and a workflow rule yourself to see how much you can change.
  • Export everything to CSV before the trial ends and open the files.
  • Ask what the paid plan costs for the users you will have in three years, not only today.

Where ZMOS fits

ZMOS is not free for ever, and it is not open source. It offers six months free for startups and registered partners, with 3 users, 1 GB of storage, 10,000 API calls a month and no card required. After that it is paid per bundle of three seats, in INR or USD. The free period is long enough to run real jobs and judge it on your own data. If you require a permanent zero-cost licence or source code you can modify, an open-source system is the better route.

Is there a completely free ERP for manufacturing?

Open-source systems such as Odoo Community and ERPNext have no licence fee. You still pay for hosting, backups, updates and the time to set them up, either in money or in your own hours.

Is a free trial long enough to judge an ERP?

A two-week trial is only long enough to look. To judge, you need to run at least one full job from purchase to close, which usually takes a month or more. Longer trials or free periods make a proper pilot possible.

What happens to my data when a free tier or trial ends?

It depends on the vendor. Ask before you start whether you can export everything and for how long the account stays readable after the end date. Export a full copy before the last day regardless.

Can I start on open source and move to a paid cloud ERP later?

Yes. Items, customers, vendors and opening balances move by CSV. History of transactions is harder to carry across, so most shops bring opening stock and open orders and keep the old system read-only for reference.
