What is the best ERP for sheet metal fabrication?
For sheet-metal fabrication the best ERP handles what breaks generic systems: sheets stocked by grade and thickness, offcuts and nesting scrap, routings through cutting, bending, welding and finishing, outside processes such as plating or powder coating, and cost per job. Choose on how it treats scrap and remnants, how it logs labour per work centre and whether it supports job work.

What is specific to sheet metal
Raw material arrives as sheets or coils by grade, thickness and size, and is consumed by area or weight rather than in whole units. Nesting produces offcuts that may be reused and skeleton scrap that is sold or lost. Most parts pass through several work centres in sequence, often with an outside step in the middle for plating, galvanising or coating. Assemblies combine cut parts, bought-in hardware and consumables such as wire and gas. A system built for discrete assembly of bought-in parts can be bent to fit, but each of these needs a clear answer before you sign.
Six things to check
Ask to see each of these with one of your own jobs.
- Sheet stock held by grade and thickness, with issue by weight or area and remnants returned to stock.
- Scrap allowance on the bill of materials so quoted cost includes it.
- Multi-step routings with a separate work centre for cutting, bending, welding and finishing.
- Job work or subcontract steps for plating, coating and heat treatment, with material tracked out and back.
- Labour logged at each work centre from a job card, so bending time is not buried in cutting time.
- Inspection records with photos for welds and finishes, linked to the job.
Where generic ERPs struggle
Many ERPs model a product with a fixed bill of materials and a single labour cost. That hides three things a fabricator must see. The first is scrap: if it is a month-end adjustment rather than a line on the BOM, quotes are wrong by that amount. The second is the outside process: if the plating vendor bill lands in overheads, the job looks more profitable than it was. The third is labour by step: if cutting, bending and welding are one number, you cannot tell which work centre is the bottleneck or which one is underquoted. Ask how each of these is handled, and ask to see it.
Options people shortlist
These names come up most for fabrication shops, listed with what each is generally known for. None of them is the answer for every shop; the six checks above are. Ask each vendor which of the six it handles natively and which needs a workaround.
| System | Generally known for |
|---|---|
| MRPeasy | Production planning for small manufacturers |
| Katana | Inventory and make-to-order flows |
| Odoo | Modular suite with manufacturing and quality apps |
| ERPNext | Open-source ERP with BOM, routing and subcontracting |
| SAP Business One | Mid-sized company ERP through partners |
| ZMOS | Job costing, scrap on the BOM and job work for small fabricators |
Where ZMOS fits
ZMOS is built for sheet-metal, machining and fabrication shops of 10 to 50 people. Bills of materials carry revisions, scrap and cost roll-up; work orders carry routing steps and work centres; job cards print with a barcode; material is issued and returned at real cost; labour is logged per work centre; and job work covers outside processes. Inspections record photos and signatures, with NCRs and CAPA linked to the job. Larger plants with hundreds of users, process industries, and companies that must host software on their own servers should look at other systems.

Inside ZMOS
Does a sheet-metal shop need nesting software inside the ERP?
No. Nesting usually stays in the CAM software that drives the laser or punch. The ERP needs the result: material consumed, offcuts returned and scrap recorded against the job, so the cost is right.
How should offcuts be handled in an ERP?
Return usable offcuts to stock as their own item or as a partial sheet with a size, so the next job can issue them. Record unusable skeleton as scrap on the job so its cost is not lost.
How is powder coating or plating costed on a job?
As a subcontract or job work step on the routing. Material goes out against the job, comes back, and the vendor bill is added to the job cost rather than to general overhead.
Can a small fabrication shop run an ERP without IT staff?
Yes, if the system is cloud based and the vendor provides a step-by-step guide. Setup is mostly loading items, work centres and a few bills of materials, which the shop owner or office manager can do.
