# Fishbowl vs Zoho Inventory for Small Manufacturers on QuickBooks

Many small US manufacturers reach the same point: QuickBooks Online still runs the books, but stock, assemblies and work orders have outgrown it. Fishbowl and Zoho Inventory are two of the names that come up. They overlap less than their category labels suggest, and the deciding question is how much real production you do.

## Quick answer

Choose Fishbowl Advanced Manufacturing if you need bills of materials, MRP and work orders beside QuickBooks. Choose Zoho Inventory if your production is kitting or one-step assembly and you want monthly billing and a free start; it syncs with QuickBooks Online but has no manufacturing module. A Zoho Creator app can add production tracking on the Zoho route.

![Fishbowl or Zoho Inventory? How much production you do decides it. Three levels, from simple to full production, for small manufacturers that keep QuickBooks. Kits and simple assemblies: Zoho Inventory composite items, or Fishbowl inventory plans. Lots, batches and several warehouses: Zoho Inventory Premium and up, or Fishbowl Growth and Scale. BOMs, MRP and work orders: Fishbowl Advanced Manufacturing, or a Zoho Creator app. A factory worker figure notes that both keep QuickBooks Online as the books. Facts below: both sync with QuickBooks Online, Fishbowl billed annually with setup included, Zoho Inventory free plan with no expiry](https://zudoworks.com/Asset/img/insights/fishbowl-vs-zoho-inventory.webp)

Both keep QuickBooks Online as the books. The amount of real production you do decides which one fits.

Fishbowl and Zoho Inventory both sit beside an accounting system and take over stock, orders and fulfilment. Both connect to QuickBooks Online. The difference is depth: Fishbowl sells a dedicated manufacturing edition with bills of materials, MRP and work orders, while Zoho Inventory stops at assemblies and kits and leaves real production to other Zoho tools.

Every plan and feature below was checked on Fishbowl’s and Zoho’s own pages on 2 November 2026. We do not quote prices; see the official [Fishbowl pricing](https://www.fishbowlinventory.com/pricing) and [Zoho Inventory pricing](https://www.zoho.com/us/inventory/pricing/) pages. We build on Zoho, so read this with that in mind; where Fishbowl is the better fit, we say so.

## The short answer

- **Choose Fishbowl Advanced Manufacturing** if you build to bills of materials with sub-assemblies, need MRP and production scheduling, and want work orders and job costing beside QuickBooks Online, Desktop or Enterprise.
- **Choose Zoho Inventory** if your “production” is kitting or one-step assembly, you want a free or low-commitment start with monthly billing, and you sell through Shopify or already use Zoho CRM.
- **Add a Zoho Creator app** if you like the Zoho route but need production tracking that Zoho Inventory does not have, built around your own process.

## What each product is

**Fishbowl** sells two families. The inventory plans, **Essentials**, **Growth** and **Scale**, are billed annually and include 2, 5 and 10 users. Above them, **Advanced Warehouse** and **Advanced Manufacturing** are quoted by users and deployment, for teams from 2 to more than 200 users. Fishbowl lists an AI Manufacturing add-on for Growth and Scale, shown as coming soon on the pricing page.

**Zoho Inventory** is Zoho’s stock and order management app. In the US it has a **Free** plan and four paid plans, **Standard**, **Premium**, **Plus** and **Enterprise**, billed monthly or yearly with a 14-day trial. Zoho’s own knowledge base says Zoho Inventory does not yet support manufacturing modules, and suggests composite items for basic assemblies. Our guide to [Zoho for manufacturing](https://zudoworks.com/insights/zoho-for-manufacturing/) explains Zoho’s other routes.

## Production: where the two really differ

Fishbowl’s Advanced Manufacturing edition lists full bills of materials with sub-assemblies and configurations, MRP and production scheduling, work orders and made-to-order builds, job, labour and landed costing, lot and batch traceability and an open API. That is a production system: it plans what to make, when, and from which components, and it tracks the cost of each job.

Zoho Inventory has none of that. Its composite items come in two types: an assembly, where building the item consumes component stock and adds finished stock, and a kit, which groups items for sale. There are no work orders that move through stages, no routings and no material requirements planning. For a business that packs gift sets, assembles a product from a fixed list of parts in one step or does light finishing, composite items are enough. For a machine shop or a multi-stage process, they are not.

If you want to stay on Zoho for sales and stock but need production tracking, the usual answer is a [Zoho Creator](https://zudoworks.com/zoho-creator-development/) app for jobs, stages and quality checks that reads and writes Zoho Inventory records. That is a build, not a product you switch on, so compare its cost honestly with Fishbowl’s manufacturing edition. Our [Zoho Creator vs Quickbase](https://zudoworks.com/insights/zoho-creator-vs-quickbase/) comparison covers shop-floor apps on low-code platforms.

## Stock, warehouses and traceability

For stock control without production, the two are closer.

- **Fishbowl** Essentials covers real-time inventory and SKU tracking, reorder points and mobile barcode scanning. Growth adds pick, receive and ship, unlimited warehouses, automated reordering, multichannel selling and sales tax automation. Scale adds lot and forward and backward traceability, demand forecasting, audit trails and compliance documentation for GMP, FDA and ISO.
- **Zoho Inventory** Standard covers 3 users, 2 locations and 500 orders a month with composite items. Premium adds serial and batch tracking, barcode generation, bin locations and customisation and automation, and Plus and Enterprise raise users, locations and order volumes.

A food, cosmetics or medical device business that needs recall-grade lot tracing and compliance documents should look closely at Fishbowl Scale. A product business with a few locations and an online store will usually find Zoho Inventory Premium or Plus enough.

## The QuickBooks link

Both products keep QuickBooks as the general ledger, but they sync in different ways.

Either way, QuickBooks keeps the books. Decide which system owns items and costs before you go live.

**Zoho Inventory’s** QuickBooks Online integration is documented in detail. The chart of accounts and customers sync both ways. Invoices, credit notes, bills, bill payments and vendor credits go one way, from Zoho Inventory to QuickBooks, with journal entries that update inventory asset and cost of goods sold accounts. Items are created in QuickBooks only when they appear on an exported transaction. One QuickBooks company connects to one Zoho Inventory organisation, both must be in the same country with the same base currency, and line-item discounts are combined at invoice level because QuickBooks Online does not support them.

**Fishbowl** lists QuickBooks Online and Xero sync from Essentials and two-way QuickBooks sync on Growth, and describes deep QuickBooks Online, Desktop and Enterprise integration on Advanced Manufacturing. That matters if your accountant still uses QuickBooks Desktop. Ask Fishbowl to show, for your plan, which records flow each way and how job costs post.

If you are also deciding whether QuickBooks should stay at all, our [Zoho Books vs QuickBooks Online comparison](https://zudoworks.com/insights/zoho-books-vs-quickbooks/) covers that question.

## Buying and implementation

Fishbowl says an implementation package is part of every purchase: a specialist, data migration (not including history), training with a six-to-eight-week training certification, and go-live support. The inventory plans are billed annually, and the Advanced editions are quoted.

Zoho Inventory is self-serve: a free plan with no time limit, a 14-day trial of paid plans and monthly or yearly billing. That makes it cheap to try, but setup, data import and any integrations are yours to plan, or a partner’s.

Price three years of each route, including QuickBooks, implementation, and on the Zoho side any Creator build you would need for production.

## Which one fits

| Kits and one-step assemblies, online sales, QuickBooks Online | Zoho Inventory |
| Sales already in Zoho CRM, light assembly | Zoho Inventory |
| An unusual multi-stage process, already on Zoho | Zoho Inventory with a Zoho Creator app |
| Accounts in QuickBooks Desktop | Fishbowl |

## Questions to settle in a demo

- Build one real product from its BOM, including a sub-assembly, and check the cost that reaches QuickBooks.
- Receive a lot, sell part of it, and trace it forward to the customer and back to the supplier.
- Ask which plan includes each feature you need, and how many users it includes.
- Ask which records sync to QuickBooks, in which direction and how often.
- Price the first three years, including implementation and any add-ons.

If the answer is Zoho, our [Zoho implementation for manufacturers](https://zudoworks.com/manufacturing/zoho-implementation/) page explains how we set it up and connect it to QuickBooks or Zoho Books.
