Description: There is no best ERP, only the best for your size and industry. Why rankings mislead, which systems sit in each size band and how to decide in a month.

# What is the best ERP?

There is no best ERP. There is a best ERP for a company of a given size, industry, budget and technical ability, and the answer changes with each of those. A 20 person fabrication shop and a 2,000 person plant should never pick the same system. Fix your size band and industry first, then judge candidates on fit, three-year cost, customisation, data ownership and support.

## Why rankings mislead

Lists of the best ERP systems are usually built from analyst reports, vendor budgets or affiliate links, and they rank products that serve different buyers as if they competed. A system that is right for a global group with an IT department is wrong for a small shop by definition, and the reverse is also true. The honest question is which products serve companies like yours, and within that group, which one handles your real orders. Rankings cannot answer that because they do not know what you make or how many people you have.

## Size bands and the systems usually found in each

The boundaries blur, and several products stretch across two bands, but this is where buyers usually find each name. If a vendor from the top band says it scales down to a 15 person shop, ask who will do the configuration and what it costs.

| Company size | Systems usually found there |
| --- | --- |
| Under 50 people | MRPeasy, Katana, Zoho Inventory, TranZact, ZMOS, Odoo, ERPNext |
| 50 to 500 people | Odoo, ERPNext, SAP Business One, NetSuite, Fishbowl, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central |
| Over 500 people | SAP S/4HANA, Oracle Fusion Cloud ERP, Microsoft Dynamics 365 |

## The criteria that decide it

Within your band, six things separate the right system from the rest.

- Fit to your industry: discrete job shop, repeat production, assembly, or process with batches and formulas.
- Three-year cost with the seats you will have, including setup, training and any partner fees.
- Customisation you can do yourself: fields, forms, rules and reports without a developer.
- Data ownership: a full export at any time, in a format another system can read.
- Support: who answers, how fast and in your time zone.
- Evidence from a demo with your own records rather than the vendor's sample data.

## Where buyers go wrong

Four mistakes repeat across companies of every size. The first is buying for the company you hope to be in ten years rather than the one you will be in three. The second is choosing on feature count, which rewards the longest list rather than the system that handles your orders. The third is skipping the export test, which leaves you unable to leave. The fourth is ignoring support hours, so every question costs a day. Each is avoidable in a month of careful selection, and each is expensive to fix after go-live.

## How to choose an ERP in a month

1. **Step 1**

Write your size band, industry and three-year headcount on one page.
2. **Step 2**

List the six criteria above and mark the two that matter most to you.
3. **Step 3**

Shortlist three systems usually found in your size band.
4. **Step 4**

Give each vendor the same ten real records and watch them move through the system.
5. **Step 5**

Add a custom field and run an export yourself in each trial.
6. **Step 6**

Price three years with the seats you expect, in writing.
7. **Step 7**

Choose the one that handled your records without a workaround.

## Where ZMOS fits

ZMOS sits in the under 50 band. It is a browser-based manufacturing system for sheet-metal, machining and fabrication shops of 10 to 50 people, with stock, bills of materials, work orders, job costing, purchasing, quality, CRM and accounting in one workspace, low-code customisation and export at any time. It is priced per bundle of three seats in INR or USD, with six months free for startups and registered partners. It is not the answer for a mid-sized or large plant, a process manufacturer, or any company that must run its ERP on its own servers.

What is the most popular ERP?

SAP, Oracle and Microsoft are the largest ERP vendors, and their products are found in most large companies. That says little about fit for a small shop, which needs a different class of product built for a few users and no IT team.

Is the best ERP the most expensive one?

No. Price follows the size of company a product is built for rather than its quality. A system priced for a 500 person company will cost a 20 person shop more and deliver less, because the shop cannot use most of it.

How long should choosing an ERP take?

For a shop under 50 people, about a month: a week to write requirements, two weeks of trials with real records, a week to price and decide. Longer selections usually mean the size band was never fixed.

Should I choose an ERP for the company I plan to be?

Plan two to three years ahead rather than ten. Buy for the headcount and products you will have then, and make sure you can export everything, so a later move is a migration rather than a rescue.

Does industry matter more than size when choosing an ERP?

Both filter the list. Size decides whether you can run the system; industry decides whether it records what you do. A process manufacturer and a job shop of the same size need different systems.
