Description: Manufacturing inventory software needs BOMs, work orders and WIP, not just counts. The immutable ledger test, the options and when a stock app is enough.

# What is the best inventory software for small manufacturers?

Inventory software for a small manufacturer must do three things a retail stock app does not: hold bills of materials, consume raw material when a work order runs, and show work in progress. There is no single best product. Pick on those three, then on whether the stock ledger can be edited after the fact, which decides whether anyone trusts the count.

## Retail stock apps versus manufacturing stock

A retail or e-commerce stock app tracks finished goods in and out. It is good at orders, channels and shipping. A manufacturer has three stock states: raw material, work in progress and finished goods. Material has to leave the raw count when it is issued to a job, sit as work in progress while the job runs, and arrive as finished goods when the job closes. Without a bill of materials and a work order, the app cannot do that, and someone ends up adjusting the count by hand every week. That adjustment is where trust in the numbers dies.

## The immutable ledger test

Ask one thing in every demo: whether a stock balance can be edited directly. If it can, any user can type a new number and the history is gone. If it cannot, every change is a movement with a date, a reason and a user, and a correction is a new movement that offsets the wrong one. The second model is harder to abuse and easier to audit, and it is what accountants expect from a ledger. It also makes cycle counting meaningful, because a count difference becomes a recorded adjustment rather than an overwrite.

## Options people shortlist

These products come up most often, with what each is generally known for. Several are inventory tools first and manufacturing second; others are ERPs that include inventory.

| System | Generally known for |
| --- | --- |
| Zoho Inventory | Stock and order management within the Zoho suite |
| Fishbowl | Inventory and manufacturing with QuickBooks links |
| Katana | Inventory with make-to-order production |
| MRPeasy | Production planning with stock control |
| Odoo | Inventory app within a modular suite |
| ERPNext | Open-source ERP with stock and manufacturing modules |
| ZMOS | Immutable stock ledger with BOM, work orders and job costing |

## When inventory software is enough

If you buy finished goods and resell them, or assemble simple kits, a stock app with a basic bill of materials is enough. If you make things through several steps, pay people by the hour to do it and need to know what each job cost, you have moved past inventory software. The sign is usually a spreadsheet beside the app that holds work orders and labour. At that point choose a system where stock, work orders and costing share one ledger, so the inventory count and the job cost are the same numbers.

## Where ZMOS fits

ZMOS includes a stock ledger with live balances per warehouse, where a correction is a new movement and never an edit, with reorder points, bills of materials, work orders that issue and return material, and purchase receipts that post stock. It is a manufacturing system rather than a stand-alone inventory app, so it suits sheet-metal, machining and fabrication shops of 10 to 50 people that need stock and job costing together. A trading business with no production, a large multi-plant company, or a shop that needs on-premise software would be better served elsewhere.

What is the difference between inventory software and a manufacturing ERP?

Inventory software tracks quantities in and out. A manufacturing ERP adds bills of materials, work orders, labour and costing, so material consumed in production is posted automatically and the cost of each job is known.

Do I need barcodes for manufacturing inventory?

Not on day one, but they remove the most common error, which is typing the wrong item or quantity. Start with barcodes on job cards and receiving, then add bin and item labels as the count stabilises.

How often should a small manufacturer count stock?

Count high-value and fast-moving items on a short cycle and the rest less often, rather than a full count once a year. A ledger that records every movement makes each count a check instead of a reset.

Can inventory software handle work in progress?

Only if it has work orders. Material issued to a work order moves out of raw stock and sits as work in progress until the job closes. Apps without work orders cannot show this state.
